Encore the Conqueror: Buick Builds a Luxury CUV for Young Professionals

2013buickencoretop
Buick has been hard at work lowering the age of its consumer base, thanks to a raft of stylish new models it bills as "invigorating." While we wouldn't use that word to describe the all-new 2013 Buick Encore, the button-nosed, blunt-butt, sculpted CUV should help with the age thing. That said, Buick readily admits that in addition to the 30-something professionals it's targeting, another audience exists: empty-nesters looking to downsize, but not downgrade.

The Encore, which was developed by a joint Korean and American team, rides on a version of GM's Gamma II global small-car platform that also underpins the Chevy Sonic and Spark. It's powered by just one engine, GM's 1.4-liter turbo Ecotec four-cylinder making 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft at just 1850 rpm, mated to a small car-specific version of the automaker's Hydra-Matic six-speed automatic that mixes a short first gear with a long overdrive in an effort to improve initial acceleration and fuel economy (23-25/30-33 city/highway).

You can get your Encore in front-wheel drive or with an "Active On-Demand" all-wheel-drive-system highlighted by an electronically activated BorgWarner torque transfer case that keeps the rear axle's clutch engaged up to 37 mph. Above that speed and with no slip detected, the clutch will disengage, effectively switching the Encore to front-wheel drive. Torque bias is 50/50, front and rear.

With so little power on tap and roughly 3200 pounds to lug around, the Encore isn't fast, but it is decently quick thanks to its low-end turbo punch. Turbo lag is minimal and raspy engine notes (usually associated with a four-cylinder engine) are minimized thanks to the addition of Buick's Quiet Tuning suite of features, including an acoustically treated headliner and window glass and the brand's all-new Bose Noise Cancelling system, which pumps in sounds designed to be the acoustic opposite of penetrating noises via the stereo's speakers. It works no matter if the stereo is on or off.

Compared with the 100-pound-plus heavier AWD model, the Encore's front-drive chassis and Continental rubber transmit a tad bit of road feel through the lightly weighted, electronically boosted helm and cushy power seats. Its tallish body leans through corners, yet it remains planted and predictable, and the gearbox smoothly knocks through its cogs no matter the situation or driver haste. Is it sporty? Yes, but not when compared to the more expensive, more powerful, and athletically biased BMW X1 or Range Rover Evoque - and that's not a bad thing. With a 36.7-foot turning diameter, navigating parking lots is a breeze.

Outside, Buick brand traits abound, including blue-tinged headlamp projectors, waterfall grille, and tri-shield badge. The questionable hood-mounted portholes blend surprisingly well with the Encore's more rugged, cooler cues like gray-colored lower trim, silver "diffusers," hatch spoiler, roof rails, and standard five-spoke wheels.

It smallish exterior dimensions belie a capacious interior that veers little from Buick's current aesthetic, although Michael Burton, Buick brand director of interior design, said his team was going for an "optimistically premium" vibe with "inspired beauty" and "sculptural persuasion." Design jargon aside, the end result is clean, refreshing, and, yes, youthful.

Clean, sweeping lines decorate soft-touch plastics and leather; seats are stuffed with high-density foam; forward visibility isn't a problem.Lay the Encore's 60/40 rear bench seats flat, and there's 48.4 cu-ft of space (18.8 cu-ft with the seats up). Fold the front passenger seat forward, and there's enough room to hold a rolled-up 8-foot-long rug, Buick says. Numerous storage bins in the dash, doors, floor, and cargo area hold everything from pencils and spare change to water bottles and purses. The standard equipment list is impressive and includes power adjustable driver's seat, 7-inch IntelliLink multimedia system (USB, AUX, Bluetooth, XM), cruise control, rearview camera, heated mirrors, and roof rails, among many others.

A choice of three optional amenity packages -- Convenience (120V outlet, dual climate control, remote start, fog lamps), Leather (heated leather seats and steering wheel, driver seat memory package), and Premium (Rainsense wipers, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Departure Warning, cargo mat, front/rear park assist, 7-speaker Bose audio) -- keeps things simple for both the customer and the dealer. Specially ordered models will have to wait around 90 days as the Encore is built at GM's Bupyeong plant in South Korea. Those wanting all-wheel drive will need to budget $1500 more for the option (officials expect 25-30% of the Encore mix will be AWD).

By blending new tech with old philosophy and adding a dash of styling and sportiness, plus a heavy hand of practicality and relative affordability (base prices start just south of 25K), Buick may finally have the recipe to conquer the younger generation of luxury CUV buyers while snaring a fair amount of empty-nesters as well.

Winter Driving Tips

If only driving home for Christmas had the mellow, laid-back vibe of the infamous Chris Rea song. The reality is more likely to involve long, stressful journeys on unfamiliar roads, often with overexcited children in the back. And then there's always the possibility of the ultimate festive nightmare – breaking down on Christmas Day.

Peter Rodger, chief examiner for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, says the best way to avoid this is by thorough preparation before setting off. "Get your battery checked, check the fluids and tyres. Remember that if you normally drive alone but on this occasion are loading the car with two adults, two children and lots of luggage and gifts, you'll need higher tyre pressure from the ones you have normally.

"It's also important to plan for the weather you'll be driving into – it might be mild in London, but if you're heading for Dundee you'll have to make sure you've got the correct levels of antifreeze and a winter motoring kit in the boot."

A surprisingly high percentage of breakdowns happen because the driver has simply run out of fuel, so fill up before you set off – don't be tempted to save money by only adding £20 worth of fuel. Motorway service stations are contractually obliged to be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but the more remote the area you're driving to the more difficult it will be to find fuel over the festive period.

It's important to keep some breakdown essentials in the car – a fully charged mobile phone, a torch, warm clothes, comfortable and waterproof shoes, hot drinks and snacks. According to AA figures, Christmas Day is the quietest day of the year for breakdowns, with 4,000 last Christmas compared with a daily average of 9,500. But if you're one of the unlucky ones, it can be a horrible experience.

"Every breakdown is stressful," says Brian Barnard, roadside patrol with Green Flag breakdown service. "But if it happens on Christmas Day it's especially difficult. People are often travelling to relatives for Christmas dinner, which tends to be at a set time and difficult to delay. Children can get very upset as they think they'll miss Santa. I was once called out to a priest whose car had broken down en route to taking a service. It wasn't possible to repair his car there and then, but I took him to the church and then got his car back to his home."

Rodger advises planning your journey in advance and not relying on your satnav. "Doing your own research will make life just that bit easier," he says. "Check online and via the radio for any traffic problems. If you're travelling with someone else then share the driving if you can. And if there's a spare adult in the car then arrange for them to be the one who keeps the children occupied so the driver isn't distracted."

Many people drive through the night at this time of year, partly to avoid heavy traffic and partly because children are more likely to sleep during the journey. But Rodger urges drivers not to travel overnight unless they absolutely have to.

"At 3am your body clock will be protesting strongly that you should be asleep and it'll be difficult to concentrate. It's vital to stop at least once every two hours and walk around."

Routes identified by motoring organisations as traffic hotspots for the festive period include the M1, A1 and A1(M) northbound, the M4 westboud to Wales and around Heathrow, the M3, A303 and M5 heading to the West Country, the M23 to Gatwick and the M11 to Stansted. The RAC points out that the M62 over the Pennines is often affected by snow, as is the A1079 between Hull and York.

Above all, don't forget to stay calm. Many people who usually only drive locally find themselves hitting the road for their annual pilgrimage to visit family. These drivers might not be as confident as more experienced ones, and are more likely to be hesitant.

"Don't let yourself get wound up by their behaviour," Rodger urges. "Give them space and let the festive spirit of peace and goodwill extend to other motorists."

Breakdown cover over the festive season

The breakdown organisations below will be operating a normal service over the festive season and on December 25. You can even join on Christmas Day. For other service providers, check before travel. Response times will vary if the weather is severe, but should average about 40 minutes.

2.0L Turbo for Cadillac ATS Makes Best Engines List

The 2.0L turbo I-4 engine that powers the all-new Cadillac ATS is one of WardsAuto.com 2013 “10 Best Engines” for North America.

The 2.0L turbo’s 272 horsepower is the highest specific output of any GM production engine, and at 136 hp per liter, is the most power-dense engine certified by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
“The 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder is a stout performer that impressed all the WardsAuto editors,” said Tom Murphy, executive editor of WardsAuto.com. “It muscled its way back into the winners’ circle with remarkable horsepower per liter, and the engineers deserve kudos for reducing engine friction some 16 percent, which means it runs smoother and more efficiently.”

Murphy added, “This engine gets four mpg better on the highway than the earlier version did a year ago in the Buick Regal GS, a former Ward’s 10 Best Engines honoree. That’s impressive. If the ATS can nibble into the market share of well-established German brands, the 2.0L turbo should get most of the credit.”

ATS’s lightweight and aerodynamic design allows it to accelerate from 0-60 in 5.9 seconds when equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine, while delivering EPA-rated fuel economy of 21 city and 31 highway mpg.

Ward’s reviewed 40 engines from 16 automakers in this year’s competition. Winners were chosen based on several factors, including power, fuel efficiency, new technology, refinement, and comparative data for similar engines.

The 2.0L turbo engine includes the latest in technology combinations.
“Benchmark efficiency and refinement were our top priorities when developing the all-new 2.0L turbo,” said Mike Anderson, global chief engineer for Ecotec engines. “The team was focused on using technology to reduce friction and engine noise and also managed to take specific output to a new level.”
Among the 2.0L turbo engine’s highlights: a direct-injection twin-cam, four-valve-per-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing; twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler; forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system; and a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston cooling.

The 2.0L turbo has a wide torque curve, delivering 90 percent of its peak 260 lb-ft. of torque (353 Nm) from 1,500 rpm to 5,800 rpm – giving the ATS the feeling of immediate power, whether from launch at a stop light or during higher-speed maneuvers, such as passing.
The new 2.0L turbo engine is built in Tonawanda, N.Y.

The 2.0L turbo ATS is priced at $35,795, including destination (excluding tax, title, license and dealer fees) and offers automatic and manual transmissions, and rear- or all-wheel drive. ATS also is available with a standard 2.5L four-cylinder, and a 3.6L V-6 is available.

2013 Encore Brings Buick Refinement to Smaller Package

When the 2013 Encore luxury small crossover arrives in early 2013, it will feature the same quiet, comfortable, refined characteristics that define larger Buicks – the result of advanced acoustic technology and attention to detail.

“Our goal in developing Encore was two-fold – to design a vehicle that sets a refinement standard in the segment for customers who are new to Buick, and to deliver a vehicle that current Buick customers interested in downsizing can get in and feel at home,” said Jim Danahy, Encore chief engineer. “Active Noise Cancellation technology is a smart way to maximize luxury, space and efficiency together.”

Encore features Buick’s first use of Bose Active Noise Cancellation. Like the popular headphones used by business travelers on airplanes, this system uses small microphones to gather and analyze sound information that’s then used to project “noise-cancelling” sound waves through the cabin.

Unlike the headphones, which fight noise over a broad spectrum of frequencies, Encore’s system selectively targets unwanted engine noise while allowing pleasant notes to pass through the cabin. The expected result is a luxurious and muted, yet still engaging drive experience.

Buick and Bose engineers worked together to use Encore’s existing in-vehicle speakers, including a subwoofer designed to fit in the center of the vehicle’s spare tire, maximizing space and reducing added weight, which helps save fuel.

Active Noise Cancellation in the Encore is always working, even if the audio system is powered off. It is standard on all Encore models regardless of whether a customer opts for the available $595 Bose audio system.

“Noise Cancellation is just part of a broader refinement strategy for Encore,” said Danahy. “We developed unique urethane spring isolators and hydraulic front ride bushings for handling characteristics that are both sporty and luxurious. We also made aerodynamic changes to smooth the air traveling around the car and quieted specific components like the alternator. Even the tires are Quiet Tuned.”

Encore’s signature QuietTuning features also include:

Acoustically treated headliner with a tuned gap between it and the high-strength-steel roof panel
Sound-absorbing materials in the cabin, under the hood and in the wheel house liners
    Aero-optimized outside mirrors
Acoustic-laminated windshield and thicker, 5mm side window glass
Foam baffles that insulate the opening of body structure cavities.

Encore arrives at dealers in early 2013 with a starting price of $24,950, including destination. Its EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of 28 mpg with a standard six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive is the highest of any crossover from a domestic automaker. The EPA estimate equates to $2,100 in fuel costs saved over five years of ownership compared to the average new vehicle.

XTS and ATS Drive Cadillac Momentum

Cadillac’s new ATS sport sedan and XTS luxury sedan drove a 30 percent increase in total November sales with strong performances on both U.S. coasts. Retail sales were up 23 percent in California and 37 percent in the Northeast.

Retail sales of the all-new compact ATS increased 87 percent in November compared to October, and half of its buyers came from competing brands.

In November, ATS was named Vehicle of the Year Award by the Motor Press Guild, the largest association of automotive journalists, following accolades from Popular Mechanics and Esquire.

The XTS is a new formula for large luxury, with 96 percent of its sales coming from retail buyers. It is the first car to feature CUE, Cadillac’s new system for connectivity and control that is a finalist for AOL Autos’ Technology of the Year Award.

“The new ATS and XTS elevate and expand our portfolio,” said Chase Hawkins, vice president of Cadillac U.S. sales. “This is driving new buyers to our showrooms, which also benefits existing models like the SRX crossover.”

The SRX had its best November sales month ever, up 13 percent over the previous year.

November marked the sixth consecutive month of sales growth for Cadillac, and was the best November since 2007.

XTS Drivers Decide How Gauge Cluster Appears

Cadillac’s new XTS lets drivers decide the design and theme for the luxury sedan’s gauge cluster, an industry-exclusive feature that allows the choice of four layouts from simplistic and minimal to ultra-informative.

The experience is powered by CUE, Cadillac’s in-vehicle experience for connectivity and control and is available on XTS models with the Premium or Platinum trim level.

Controlled by an intuitive multi-directional switch on the steering wheel, the 12.3-inch LCD screen replaces traditional analog dials. Each of the four cluster layouts continually displays vehicle speed and fuel information, just like the dials of old. What’s new is the reconfigurable display technology that enabled Cadillac designers to formulate options for both the design and type of information displayed. The result is four distinct clusters that skew to particular styles of luxury sedan drivers.

“We spent time with owners of all kinds of vehicles to learn how they used the radio, navigation, phone settings, and other user connectivity features,” said Scott Martin, senior creative designer in charge of building the digital cluster layouts. “Most drivers fall into one of four different categories in terms of the amount of information they want to see at any given time, so we built the XTS gauge cluster layouts to appeal to any one of those drivers.”

The “Balanced” display is the default cluster design for XTS, designed for drivers who prefer a traditional layout while determining the size and graphic quality of the display. The layout features three “zones” across the screen, displaying a speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, radio station information, and outside temperature.

The “Performance” layout is intended for enthusiast drivers who want information on the car itself. The clean look features a large speedometer on the right and tachometer on the left. The driver can also modify the display with other performance-driven information such as fuel consumption and tire pressure.

The “Enhanced” cluster display option is for the uber-connected driver. The web-inspired design features a navigation map on the left and digital speed and fuel readings on the right. The layout is simple and clean, allowing the driver to pull up and scroll through all the information pages with the touch of a button.

The “Simple” cluster layout is designed for the minimalist who desires a more sparing approach to graphics. The cluster focuses on speed, fuel and audio, with additional information available at the driver’s request.

Each cluster layout allows users to view more information through a “screen-within-a-screen” feature. This smaller display in the center of the speedometer and tachometer images lets users view navigation routes and control the radio, among other features.

“Drivers can also further customize each layout to their own personal liking,” Martin said. “They can flip through all the information pages to permanently display their favorite preset radio stations, check tire pressure, navigation, fuel range, and temperature among other features.”

Cadillac ATS Wins Urban Car of the Year Award

The all-new Cadillac ATS today was named 2013 Urban Car of the Year by Decisive magazine. This award is part of the Urban Wheel Awards held annually each January at the North American International Auto Show.

The ATS was chosen in part for its performance when tested in urban environments for comfort, ease of maneuvering and technical sophistication. The Urban Wheel Awards judging panel spent several months determining the most stylish, practical and attainable new vehicles for 2013 before settling on winners for car, truck, and green vehicle of the year.

"The ATS is the latest and most significant step in Cadillac's long-term mission to return to being the standard of the world,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. “That makes it especially rewarding to have ATS recognized by experts on the leading edge of cars and culture."

Each of the Decisive magazine Urban Vehicles of The Year will be featured in the winter issue of the magazine, which will also be online at www.decisivemagazine.com.

"The renaissance at Cadillac shows no signs of abating,” said Randi Payton, founder of the Urban Wheel Awards, now in its 17th year. “With the good-looking and fun-to-drive ATS, Cadillac is wading into one of the most competitive automotive segments in the market with a very strong contender."

A compact sport sedan, smaller than Cadillac’s centerpiece CTS product line, the new ATS is the lightest car in its class with a unique architecture designed for nimble driving performance. The new ATS is offered in rear- and all-wheel drive versions, with a choice of powerful and efficient four and six-cylinder engines.

Magic Magnets Give Buick Crossovers AWD Refinement

When snow inevitably starts falling over the General Motors Proving Ground in Michigan this winter, Buick engineers will use the conditions to put the finishing touches on the Encore luxury small crossover. It arrives early next year as the brand’s first entry into the burgeoning small crossover segment.

Encore’s “Active On-Demand” all-wheel drive is designed to give the vehicle the fluid drive characteristics and sure-footed traction Buick drivers expect but in a smaller, lighter package. Unlike traditional systems that engage all four drive wheels after slip is detected, Encore uses a magnetic charge to engage a clutch at the rear axle preemptively when the vehicle is at rest because slippage is most likely to occur just as the vehicle begins to move. If no slip is detected, a computer control automatically disengages the preemptive torque to the clutch once the Encore is underway, returning the system to a primarily front-drive operation.

“A Buick all-wheel drive system has to deliver the best traction possible, and it has to do it in a way that’s totally imperceptible to the driver,” said Encore Chief Engineer Jim Danahy. “We engineered Encore’s lightweight, responsive and refined system to deliver on the expectations of demanding luxury buyers.”

Buick engineers used their experience developing an all-wheel drive system for the Enclave luxury crossover SUV and applied it to Encore’s smaller packaging. The Enclave uses similar technology. To fit Encore’s weight and space needs, engineers worked with BorgWarner to develop a new, more compact coupling for the rear axle.

Reduced weight benefits Encore’s handling, as well as fuel economy. With all-wheel drive, Encore’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Beyond weight savings, the advantages of Active On-Demand all-wheel drive for the driver include rapid activation and deactivation, more control over the transfer of torque, more refined performance in tight turns and parking situations and better integration with safety systems like ABS and stability control.

“Technology is allowing us to translate Buick’s quiet, comfortable ride to smaller vehicles than we could before,” said Danahy. “This all-wheel drive system, like turbocharged engines and Buick QuietTuning technologies, allows drivers to experience that Buick DNA with unprecedented efficiency and maneuverability.”

According to the 2012 Harris Poll AutoTECHCASTSM Study, “familiarity with all-wheel drive continues to climb” and one third of all new car buyers would consider purchasing the technology on their next new vehicle. Consideration of all-wheel drive is greatest among luxury crossover/SUV owners, along with owners between 35-54 years of age. Among current all-wheel drive vehicle owners, 83 percent consider it an important feature for their vehicle.

In addition to the upcoming Encore and the redesigned 2013 Enclave, Buick offers all-wheel drive for the 2013 LaCrosse V-6 luxury sedan.

Listening Helps Cadillac ATS Shape Interior Acoustics

The all-new Cadillac ATS sport sedan employs high-tech electronics to manage interior noise, following a simple piece of parental advice – “Listen!”

The new ATS contains three microphones inside the cabin that carefully monitor, and then adjust, interior sounds to create a proper environment for Cadillac’s sport sedan.

Active sound control technology proactively monitors the ATS’s cabin for unwanted noise and works to eliminate it. Alternately, passive sound-deadening in the form of covers, foams and other materials built into the vehicle absorb, block and eliminate vibrations, wind noise, and noise from passing cars.

Working together these technologies reduce the ATS’s overall sound levels by 3 decibels while idling, or the equivalent of making the vehicle nearly 50 percent quieter.

“Not all noise is unwanted, especially in a vehicle like ATS,” said vehicle performance engineer James Murphy. “While wind rush penetrating a closed window is undesirable, the driver does want to hear the vehicle respond with power during spirited driving.”

On the “active” front, Cadillac sound engineers worked with audio experts from Bose to create sound management technology that offsets low frequency “boom” noises between 40Hz and 180Hz.

“Imagine the feeling that goes through your chest at a rock or hip-hop concert when the bass hits you,” said Kent Ting, noise and vibration engineer. “That is similar to the ‘boom’ noises the Bose Active Sound Management system addresses by providing a cancelling noise signal.”

Three Bose microphones constantly monitor sound quality and deliver a counterbalance of noise through the vehicle’s speakers to cancel unwanted noises. The microphones are strategically placed above the interior door frame on the front driver and passenger and rear driver’s side to listen to the same sounds the occupant would hear.

“Passive” noise cancelling materials are woven into the vehicle in unassuming places, following the attention-to-detail-approach taken by ATS engineers. Some examples include:

Roof – between the roof’s base sheet-metal and the interior lining, the ATS is treated with sound- deadening material that lessens noises like rain hitting the vehicle.
Windshield and front side windows – Instead of traditional tempered glass, the ATS features acoustically laminated glass, which is made up of a sheet of sound-absorbing laminate sandwiched between two layers of glass. This limits the sound of wind rush and other traffic while driving.
Rocker sections are injected with sound-absorbing foam that reduces noises made by the tires on varied road surfaces.
Undercarriage – An underbody aero shield and wheelhouse covers serve a dual purpose of blocking road noise while driving, and trapping powertrain noise at idle.
Powertrain – The ATS’s engine uses laminated steel, acoustic covers, isolation, and glove-fitted foam materials that contribute to reducing noise and vibrations under the hood. All of these materials are especially helpful in minimizing noise from the high pressure Spark Ignition Direct Injection system, which typically produces a “tick-tick-tick” diesel engine type of noise when the vehicle is idle.

Buick’s October Retail Sales Highest Since 2006

Buick’s 13,384 sales for the month of October 2012 were not only a 14.5 percent year-over-year improvement, they were also the brand’s highest retail sales since 2006. What’s more, sales to individual customers were up 15 percent year-over-year — the sixth consecutive month of the increase. The positive results put Buick on track to achieve its best retail sales year since 2006.

One of the regions in which The Tri-Shield brand is growing at a rapid pace is (this author’s old stomping grounds) Miami — a city known for its trend-setting style, which — among other things — includes flashy cars, many of which are imports. Retail sales of Buick vehicles increased a whopping 117 percent in metro Miami, with more than twice as many car shoppers choosing Buick this October compared to the same time period in 2011.

“Miami is a unique and challenging market,” said Greg Ross, Buick regional zone manager for Florida. “Luxury brands often outsell more affordable brands and the mainstream segments are import-oriented, too. Buick’s growth in this image-conscious market is all about great products, advertising and dealers.”

Apparently, the Experience Buick lease program is to thank for the uptick, according to general manager of Williamson Buick-GMC in Miami Mark Naszradi. The program offers a 24-month lease that includes SiriusXM satellite radio, OnStar Directions and Connections and oil changes in the monthly payments. Since launching in mid-March, the amount of Buick buyers in Miami choosing to lease (as opposed to finance) has grown from 47 percent to 65 percent. In addition, Buick leasing has more than doubled since the introduction of Experience Buick.

Buicks Are ‘In’ This Season in Trend-Setting Miami

Buick’s October retail sales were the highest since 2006, putting the brand on track for its best retail sales year since that year. Year-over-year sales to individual customers increased for the sixth straight month, up 15 percent. Total Buick sales, including those sold to executive fleets and other commercial customers, also grew by 15 percent.

Miami – a city dominated by luxury and import vehicles – is among the places where Buick is growing rapidly. More than twice as many metropolitan Miami car shoppers chose Buick in October compared to 2011, with retail sales up 117 percent.

Mark Naszradi, general manager for Williamson Buick-GMC in Miami, credits Experience Buick for attracting new customers to his showroom. “The new approach to leasing has really helped us,” Naszradi said. “Miami is a big leasing area.”

Experience Buick is a 24-month lease that includes SiriusXM satellite radio, OnStar Directions and Connections and oil changes in the monthly payments. Since launching in mid-March, lease penetration has grown from 47 percent of Buick sales in Miami to 65 percent in October.

Nationally, leasing has more than doubled since the introduction of Experience Buick.

The new 2013 Enclave luxury crossover is now arriving at dealers with many new standard features, including the industry’s first front center air bag and an IntelliLink voice command system. Enclave retail sales were up 1 percent year-over-year in October.

GM Reports Third Quarter Net Income of $1.5 billion as EBIT-adjusted increases to $2.3 billion

General Motors Co. announced third quarter net income attributable to common stockholders of $1.5 billion, or $0.89 per fully diluted share including the impact of special items, which reduced net income by $0.1 billion and diluted earnings per share by $0.04. In the third quarter a year ago, GM’s net income attributable to common stockholders was $1.7 billion, or $1.03 per fully diluted share.

Net revenue in the third quarter of 2012 was $37.6 billion compared with $36.7 billion a year ago. Earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) adjusted was $2.3 billion compared with $2.2 billion a year ago.

“GM had a solid quarter because customers around the world love our new vehicles and we’re also seeing green shoots take hold on tough issues like complexity reduction, pensions and Europe,” said Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “We are going to keep playing offense with growth products like the Chevrolet Onix, Opel Mokka and Cadillac ATS and continue to systematically address business risks.”

Senior Vice President and CFO Dan Ammann added, “While we still have a lot of work to do, especially in Europe, it is encouraging to see our results begin to reflect the discipline we are bringing to bear on the overall business.”

Third Quarter Segment Results

GM North America (GMNA) reported EBIT-adjusted of $1.8 billion compared with $2.2 billion a year ago.
GM Europe (GME) reported an EBIT-adjusted of $(0.5) billion compared with $(0.3) billion a year ago.
GM International Operations (GMIO) reported EBIT-adjusted of $0.7 billion compared with $0.4 billion a year ago.
GM South America (GMSA) reported EBIT-adjusted of $0.1 billion compared with near breakeven results a year ago.
GM Financial earnings before tax was $0.2 billion, up slightly compared with a year ago.

Cash Flow and Liquidity

For the quarter, automotive cash flow from operating activities was $3.1 billion, up $1.3 billion from a year ago, and automotive free cash flow was $1.2 billion, up $0.9 billion. GM ended the quarter with very strong total automotive liquidity of $37.5 billion. Automotive cash and marketable securities was $31.6 billion.

Pension De-Risking Transactions

During the quarter, approximately 30 percent of eligible U.S. salaried retirees accepted GM’s offer to receive a lump sum payment in lieu of ongoing pension benefits. In addition, GM expects to close in early November a previously announced transaction through which The Prudential Insurance Company of America will assume responsibility for pension obligations covering GM’s remaining eligible U.S. salaried retirees.

Through annuitizations and lump sum payments, approximately $29 billion of GM’s U.S. salaried pension liability is expected to be eliminated compared with an original estimate of $26 billion.

In connection with these transactions, GM expects to make total cash contributions to its U.S. salaried pension plan of approximately $2.6 billion. In addition, GM will record an approximately $2.9 billion pre-tax charge in the fourth quarter as a special item. GM originally estimated that it would make a cash contribution of $3.5 billion to $4.5 billion and record a charge of $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion.

Fourth Quarter Outlook

GM’s consolidated fourth quarter EBIT-adjusted will follow typical seasonal trends with results estimated to be similar to or slightly better than the same period a year ago.

GM also indicated that to the extent positive financial trends continue the reversal of a significant portion of its valuation allowance on U.S. and Canadian deferred tax assets is possible in the fourth quarter of 2012. At Sept. 30, 2012, valuation allowances on deferred tax assets in the United States and Canada were $35.6 billion and $3.2 billion. In addition, valuation allowance reversals could result in goodwill impairment.

Europe Outlook

GM currently estimates GME’s EBIT-adjusted for the 2012 calendar year to be in a range of $(1.5) billion to $(1.8) billion, depending on the level of restructuring activity in the fourth quarter. In addition, the company is targeting full-year 2013 EBIT-adjusted for GME to be slightly better than 2012. Break-even EBIT-adjusted results are targeted by mid-decade.

General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM, TSX: GMM) and its partners produce vehicles in 30 countries, and the company has leadership positions in the world's largest and fastest-growing automotive markets. Design Tricks Make 2013 Enclave a Halloween Family Treat

With an estimated 41 million trick-or-treaters on the candy trail this Halloween, some of them will be driven to the neighborhoods with the best treats in the new 2013 Buick Enclave luxury crossover SUV. And they’ll find a number of features that make it an ideal family vehicle on October 31 and the 364 less-spooky days of the year.

The U.S. Census Bureau says 115 million housing units could be potential stops for costumed ghouls, princesses and superheroes. US News and World Report named the Buick Enclave 2012’s “Best Three Row SUV for Families,” ranking it first out of 22 vehicles in the segment, based on factors including performance, interior, exterior, safety and reliability.

Enclave is the only vehicle in its segment to offer third-row seating for three, and it’s more spacious as well – good for the candy-collecting plastic pumpkins and pillow cases. Enclave’s 33.2 inches of third-row legroom is 2.4 inches more than an Infiniti JX and 4.0 inches more than an Audi Q7.

“Aiming to achieve the best ease-of-access resulted in an Enclave with choices   second row captain’s chairs or a bench seat with SmartSlide, a system that slides the second-row forward with the pull of a single handle to open up a wide path to Enclave’s third row,” said chief engineer Sue Eckel. “On Halloween, costumed kids in an Enclave can make record time jumping from that back row to the doorbell.”

Behind the third row, 23.3 cubic feet of cargo space is enough to haul approximately 26,841 snack size boxes of Milk Duds, or some spare costumes and the family dog. And you can leave your kids wondering if the standard power liftgate is controlled by ghosts.

Safety is paramount on a night busy with pedestrian traffic. According to AAA Insurance, three measures can help ensure a safe Halloween drive:

Avoid neighborhood shortcuts. If possible, avoid cutting through residential streets where trick-or-treaters are likely to be present. When providing directions to a party, avoid routing guests through neighborhoods unless necessary.

Watch for children in the street.  Excited trick-or-treaters, often in dark costumes, may not pay attention to traffic and cross mid-block, walk in the street, on medians or between parked cars.

Slow down. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, a pedestrian is more than twice as likely to be killed if hit by a car traveling at 35 mph compared to 25 mph.

The 2013 Enclave has a strong list of vehicle safety features, including a standard Rear Vision Camera that provides visual and audible warnings when an object or person is near the rear bumper. A Rear Cross-Traffic Alert system uses radar sensors to alert the driver of approaching traffic from either side while the vehicle is in reverse.

Enclave comes standard with high-intensity discharge headlamps, which provide crisp, clear lighting of the road ahead. Articulating headlights, which rotate up to 15 degrees to follow the road ahead, are an option.

Every Enclave is also equipped with OnStar, which leverages the technology to connect to your car from anywhere. Through the RemoteLink smartphone app, owners can map a trick-or-treating route and send it to the vehicle remotely for easy turn-by-turn directions.

Cadillac ELR to be Built at Detroit-Hamtramck

Preparations will soon be under way at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant to build the Cadillac ELR, a luxury coupe featuring extended-range electric technology, General Motors North America President Mark Reuss said Tuesday.

“The ELR will be in a class by itself, further proof of our commitment to electric vehicles and advanced technology,” Reuss said in a keynote address at the SAE Convergence Conference in Detroit. “People will instantly recognize it as a Cadillac by its distinctive, signature look and true-to-concept exterior design.”

Production is scheduled to begin in late 2013.

The addition of the ELR to Detroit-Hamtramck represents a $35 million investment and increases total product investment to $561 million since December 2009. It is the first two-door car built at the plant since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado.

“This investment reflects the corporation’s confidence that the highly skilled members of UAW Local 22 can successfully build one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in the world,” said UAW Vice President Joe Ashton, who directs the union's GM Department. “The hard work and dedication of our members demonstrates that we can competitively manufacture products for the future right here in Detroit.”

The ELR is the production version of Cadillac’s Converj, a concept vehicle revealed at the North American International Auto Show in 2009. The ELR will advance the design theme of the Converj while featuring an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. It will use electricity as its primary power source to drive the car without using gasoline or producing tailpipe emissions. When the battery’s energy is low, the ELR seamlessly switches to a gasoline-powered electric generator to allow hundreds of additional driving miles. The lithium-ion battery will be built at GM’s Brownstown Battery Assembly plant in Brownstown, Mich.

Detroit-Hamtramck is the only U.S. automotive manufacturing plant that mass produces extended-range electric vehicles. The plant is home to the Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera, and Holden Volt extended-range electric vehicles. Extended-range electric vehicles are exported to 21 countries from the plant.

Cadillac has been a leading luxury auto brand since 1902. In recent years, Cadillac has engineered a historic renaissance led by artful engineering and advanced technology. More information on Cadillac can be found at media.cadillac.com.

2014 Cadillac Escalade on the prowl

Escalade-spy-shots-1-628
Spy photographers have nabbed our first look at the 2014 Cadillac Escalade. The luxury SUV is set to ride on the new GMT900 truck platform will underpin next-generation General Motors workhorses like the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. While the machines in these photos are heavily camouflaged, we can see the truck will bow with front fascia akin to what we've seen from both the Cadillac XTS and ATS, albeit on a much larger scale. LED accent lighting stretches from each headlamp all the way down to the lower bumper, and a massive, tight-mesh grille looks to be part of the package as well.

Under the hood, the Cadillac Escalade will continue to offer buyers a V8 option, though word has it the company's engineers may also be hard at work on new twin-turbo V6 based on the current 3.6-liter unit. A next-generation CTS with that same mill has already been spotted in development.

Meanwhile, the interior will enjoy the addition of the Cadillac CUE infotainment system as well as a full aesthetic update.

Cadillac ATS wins Esquire Car of the Year award

Esquireatscoty

General Motors' all-new Cadillac compact sedan won Esquire magazine's 2012 Car of the Year award.

The Cadillac ATS, which is assembled at GM's Lansing Grand River plant, started shipping to dealers a few weeks ago.

GM is betting on the ATS to inject a fresh dose of youthfulness into its global luxury brand. The company invested heavily in a documentary-style advertising campaign during the Summer Olympics to give the launch a boost.

"The new ATS is Cadillac's spirited challenger, built to take on the world," Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing, said in a statement. "Having its design and performance validated in this fashion is a meaningful step in our journey."

The ATS is one of 10 all-new or significantly redesigned vehicles Cadillac is introducing over the next few years.

Turbo Boost, Euro Feel: 2013 Buick Verano Turbo

628x471

Introduced last year, Buick's compact Verano returns for it sophomore season with an available, turbocharged engine. What a difference a drivetrain makes.

The addition of the new turbo for 2013 gives Verano an entirely different feel. Imported from the Buick Regal, intercooled and turbocharged, the power output of the direct injection, Ecotec four belies its size. The 2.0 liter turbo makes 250 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm, and 260 lb. ft. of torque @ 2,000 rpm. That's plus 70 and 89, respectively, compared to the 2.4 liter four that's offered in standard Veranos, and it translates to a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds, in the 3,300 lb. Buick. Quick it is, with a smooth, lag-free power flow. The power boost doesn't extract a perceivable penalty at the pumps, either. Whereas the EPA expects standard Verano models to return between 20-21 mpg's city, 30-32 highway, Turbo versions rate 21/30.

Ably assisting the turbo is the 6-speed manual transmission. Drivers have their no-cost choice of either the stick or a six-speed automatic. We've reached the point where a manual transmission is rarely found on anything but a sports car or an econobox.

So finding a three-pedal option on the Verano Turbo comes as a happy surprise. The turbo four/six-speed stick combination really wakes the car up. Carving my way through a curvy road at the Verano's launch event, I used the stick to plant the engine right in the middle of its sweet spot, and held it there. Great fun. And once that road was ironed straight, a couple of crisp shifts through the remaining gears set the car up to cruise at highway speeds.

I drove both engine/transmission combos, by the way, and if you want an automatic, this one works nicely with the turbo, too. The only caveat is that it is not a dual clutch unit, so even if the car had paddle shifters (which it doesn't), you wouldn't have the grin-inducing sensation of instantaneous gear changes, when you shift it yourself.

A quick word here about quiet. Like all Buicks, Verano undergoes a combination of treatments aimed at reducing, absorbing or blocking out noise and vibration. Collectively, Buick refers to this as Quiet Tuning, and it does make for a noticeably low noise level in the cabin. So when I set the car into that twisting road at 3,500 rpm, I could feel the power on tap under my foot, but engine noise was a non-issue. The use of laminated glass in particular (everywhere except the backlight) seems to be particularly effective at stifling exterior sound.

Quiet Tuning is one thing; chassis tuning is something else. Buick has done both, tweaking the Verano Turbo's suspension and electric power steering calibration to sharpen its reflexes. The Verano is positioned as a luxury sedan, not a sport sedan. But, turbocharged and with chassis tweaked, it's clearly athletic enough to be very fun to drive. At the same time, it maintains a level of ride comfort that buyers expect of an upscale compact car.

The Turbo model enters at the head of the Verano class. This means that beyond the amped up powertrain and beefed-up suspension, Verano Turbo is packing a generous complement of standard equipment — fully contented, as they say.

Skimming some highlights from the Turbo's roster of gear: dual exhaust, sport pedals, rear spoiler, a Bose, 9-speaker premium sound system, leather-appointed upholstery, push-button start, rear park assist and rearview camera, side blind zone alert and rear cross-traffic alert, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. About the only options are a power sunroof, a navigation system and some special, exterior colors.

Also standard is Intellilink, which connects your smartphone to the color, touch screen display, using a USB port or Bluetooth. Smartphones can then be controlled by voice command or steering wheel mounted switchgear. The system also allows streaming audio through your phone via services like Stitcher or Pandora.

Verano Turbo's interior will suit virtually any height passenger up front. With six footers up front, like-size passengers can fit in back (snugly), with some compromises.

Visibility is generally good, and the army of electronics mentioned above has your back when parking, changing lanes or just trying to back out of a parking lot spot, without getting clipped. Interior fit and finish is nicely done, with an upscale look and feel. HVAC controls on the center stack are easy to reach and operate. Above them, other controls are clustered together, and harder to pick up at a glance. That starts with the starter; the push button for which is less prominent than it ought to be.

Inside storage is limited (small center console, door pockets, glove box), however, the trunk is usefully sized (14.7 cu. ft.) and shaped. Trunk hinges impinge on the contents, but there's an extra, small, hidden storage space below the load floor. Rear seatbacks fold (mostly) flat for extra cargo carrying options.

Verano Turbo is cleanly styled, quiet and well appointed. And, particularly in manual transmission guise, the Buick has a distinctly, European driving feel. One of the goals for Verano is to bring new people to the brand. On that score, after one year, the numbers are impressive. Some 52 percent of Verano buyers are conquests from other manufacturers. That was before the debut of the Turbo.

The addition of this model pretty much guarantees a new pool of Buick shoppers; ones who favor a sportier sedan. I think they'll find a lot to like here.

Here's A Tip To Extend the Life of Your Car

Go easy when you’re stuck.

When stuck in mud or snow, don’t make the problem worse by damaging an expensive component. Gently rocking in an attempt to free the car is fine. But if it looks as though you’re really stuck, don’t keep at it. Throwing your car from forward to reverse repeatedly, as well as spinning tires at high speeds, can generate lots of heat and spell trouble for transmissions, clutches, and differentials. It may be cheaper in the long run to call the tow truck rather than risk big repair bills down the road. It’s a good idea to carry a traction aid in the trunk, such as sand, gravel, or cat litter.

Luxury Meets Technology: 2013 Cadillac XTS

Cadillac's transformation continues. Gone from the lineup is the DTS, and with it the last of the company's former generation of full-size luxury sedans. Assuming the flagship role is the XTS. The styling of the four-door sedan shows another variation of Cadillac's "Arts and Science" design language.

Though more toned down than some of the new generation Cadillacs (like the CTS), the razor cut edges, bold grille and big (19-, 20-inch) rims put a modern, Cadillac stamp on the XTS. One hallmark of a good design is that it can make a large car seem smaller than it is. That's true here: The XTS is sneaky big, though it's still half a foot shorter than the DTS was.

XTS is offered in Base, Luxury, Premium and Platinum trim levels, with prices starting at an MSRP of $44,075. Front-whee-drive is standard, with all-wheel-drive available on all but Base cars. My test drive was split between two AWD models; one in Platinum trim, and the other Premium.

The sole powertrain pairing for XTS links a 3.6-liter V-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. The LFX engine is rated at 304 h.p. and 264 lb. ft. of torque. That's translates to a 0-60 time in the high six second range, and in practice, it's ample power for your driving needs. Really, the only surprise about the powertrain has to do not with what's here, but rather with what's not.

The luxury class is about surplus; giving you more than you need (but might possibly want). The option sheets on many premium cars include multiple engines, at least one of which typically provides more power than you'll ever find a use for. Not here, at least not yet. That said, the sole six is smooth and competent, and it also returns some respectable numbers for fuel economy. Interestingly, the choice of FWD or AWD has little impact on your MPG's. The EPA estimates that the XTS will return 17 miles per gallon city, 28 highway (FWD); 17/26 for AWD models.

The car's interior is impressively large and comfortable. Six-footers fit easily in either row. The look and feel of the cabin are in line with expectations for a fine car. Materials look rich to the eye and feel substantial to the touch; creature comforts abound. Ambient lighting give the car a cozy, luxury vibe after dark. The layout and format of the digital dash can be selected by the driver. A head's-up display is also part of the equipment list on Premium and Platinum models. The content of the display can be configured to suit the driver's needs.

Cadillac eschews traditional knobs and switches for controlling many functions, in favor of touch-sensitive technologies. You swipe and poke at the 8-inch screen and related access points, using moves that will be familiar to many smart phone or tablet users, and perhaps foreign to some Cadillac shoppers. Addressing both markets, an iPad is included with each new XTS. Preloaded with several, Cadillac apps, it provides new age owners with a gateway for interacting with their new car, as well as some cross-training for less tech-oriented buyers.

A Driver Awareness Package is standard on the top two trim levels. It includes forward collision warning, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot alert and Safety Alert Seat. The latter feature is intriguing: the seat cushion vibrates, to warn the driver of potential problems. With all the potential distractions from one's driving that we deal with today – inside and outside the car — any reminders to pay attention are a good thing. The effectiveness of this particular method of notification depends on how willing you are to take advice from the seat of your pants.

Speaking of pants, they have pockets, and when it's time to unload them, the interior has a fair number of spots to park your belongings. Larger items go "trunkward," and while XTS is far from old school, in this regard, it's downright traditional. The XTS trunk measures 18 cubic feet. Vacation sized, it is, with fold down rear seats to accommodate longer items, and an additional small, storage bay hidden beneath the trunk floor.

All XTS models enjoy the benefits of GM's Magnetic Ride Control suspension. Experience in other GM products so equipped has impressed us with the reflexes of this system. Real-time adjustments keep the car's suspension on the same page as its driving conditions. In this application, the emphasis is more on ride comfort than handling, and it's still very effective. The XTS corners competently, and has a firm, yet comfortable ride quality. Cadillac's use of a hydraulic power steering unit in favor of the electromechanical units currently in vogue is surprising, but also welcome. The XTS steering is well-weighted for feel, yet properly boosted for ease.

XTS is slotted, sized and priced about midway between the midsize and full-size premium segments. So, while future product plans from Cadillac may well include a full-size rear drive sedan that would bump XTS from its flagship role, it would slide to a spot still distinct from its premium, midsize competition. For luxury leaning buyers who appreciate comfort and cutting edge electronics, XTS offers real value for the money.

2013 SRX Delivers Home Theatre-like Tech

The refreshed 2013 Cadillac SRX will offer an entertainment package featuring a Blu-Ray DVD player that extends Cadillac’s signature CUE system for connectivity to the rear seats along with a redesigned kid-tested gaming-style remote control that allows each of the 8” flip-up rear screens to play unique media.

With CUE, users can pair of up to 10 Bluetooth-enabled devices at once, including mobile phones, SD cards, USBs, and MP3 players. For the first time, rear-seat passengers can connect to and manage their own music players and playlists. A special connector cable sold separately allows watching movies stored in media players.

The addition of Blu-Ray allows families the same video quality on the road as they’re accustomed to at home. Front-seat passengers will be able to watch videos via the 8” touchscreen CUE display on the center-stack while the vehicle is in park. With audio playing throughout the vehicle’s speakers, the SRX becomes a home-theatre on wheels.

A dual-play capability feature allows one user to play a video game on one monitor while another user watches a movie or listens to the radio on the other.

“Having multiple media connectivity options really gives owners flexibility with entertainment, especially families,” said Charlene Goike, rear seat entertainment lead engineer. “One can easily pop in their camera’s SD cards on the way home from their kid’s sports games to let the young ones instantly relive the action.”

The rear-seat entertainment package also gets an all-new cordless remote control, designed for familiarity and ease of use. Shaped like a video game remote control, it mimics the layout of buttons to help young users access their favorite media more easily. A quick-reference sheet will also be provided so users know what each button on the remote will do.

“We actually invited a group of kids to test and interact with the new rear-seat entertainment features,” said Shannon Chiarcos, human factors engineer responsible for gathering consumer feedback on entertainment options in the vehicle. “The data we collected allowed us to go back and make several adjustments to the system, including simplifying the remote control so that kids could use it without the help of an adult.”

The SRX gets a pair of updated wireless headphones designed to fit more comfortably than previous versions as well as the ability to toggle between what is being played on either back-seat monitor. Users can also adjust volume directly on the headphones themselves.

The rear-seat entertainment package will be available as an option on Luxury (with navigation,) Performance and Premium SRX trim models and will retail for $1,595.

Industry-First Lighting Tech Benefits 2013 Enclave

The Enclave luxury crossover SUV was a harbinger of a new era of design for Buick when it arrived in 2007. By the end of this year, owners of the new 2013 Enclave will experience the next generation Enclave with advanced exterior lighting, including an industry-first taillight technology.

Working with supplier 3M, Buick developed a unique LED taillight design with a soft, uniform red glow in a complex and unique shape. Like Enclave’s standard LED daytime running lamps and accent lighting, this contemporary lighting effect previews a future design element for other models the Buick lineup.

“As a brand driven by intelligent design and technology, Buick has to be at the forefront of purposeful, modern design cues,” said Mark Adams, executive director of Buick Design. “Our signature LED lighting serves a double purpose of providing a premium look and making sure our vehicles are unmistakable in the eyes and mirrors of other drivers on the road. Some of the new Enclave’s design cues will carry over to other Buick models to come, but every execution will be true to each model’s character.”

Enclave’s taillight glow is made possible by 3M Uniform Lighting Lens technology, which uses a precision engineered micro-patterned, thermoformable polycarbonate material that provides even illumination around complex shapes with fewer LEDs, reducing both complexity and energy use.

For 2013, Enclave comes standard with signature L-shaped LED daytime running lamps and high-intensity discharge headlamps, which provide a light clearer and brighter than halogen. Articulating headlamps, which use small motors to rotate the light up to 15 degrees with the curve of the road, are an option.

The 2013 Enclave’s advanced lighting story continues inside, with a cabin bathed in the Ice Blue glow of ambient lighting.

Care and Maintenance Tips Keep Your Car Running in Top-Notch Condition

Maintain your car’s battery.

Maybe the manufacturer says your battery is maintenancefree, but don’t you believe it! Check your battery regularly to extend its life and avoid the hassle of being stranded with a dead battery.

Begin with the simple: keeping your battery clean. A dirty case can actually cause current to drain. Wipe with a damp rag. Use a mild detergent if necessary.
Next, clean the battery posts or terminals. Loosen and remove the negative cable (black or minus sign) first, then the red positive cable. Use a brass wire battery brush dipped in a paste made from a few tablespoons of baking soda and a little water.
Inspect the battery case for damage, such as cracks or bulges — signs that a battery needs to be replaced.
Reinstall the cables, positive first, and coat the terminals and clamps with a thin coating of grease to prevent new corrosion.

Design, Engineering Contribute to ATS Fuel Economy

Cadillac’s award-winning 2013 ATS sport sedan with the new 272 horsepower 2.0L Turbocharged engine today received an EPA fuel economy rating of 21 city and 31 highway mpg, evidence that its lightweight and aerodynamic design marries high performance and fuel efficiency.

The ATS is available with three engine options. The standard 2.5L four-cylinder engine with 202 horsepower offers an EPA rated 22 city and 33 highway mpg. The top-of-the-line 3.6L V-6 and 321 horsepower offers an EPA tested 19 city and 28 highway mpg.

ATS engines rank near the top of the industry for “power density,” or horsepower per liter. Unlike its European rivals, ATS takes regular unleaded fuel except for the 2.0L Turbo engine. And for that model, it is a recommendation not a requirement.

“ATS is a no-compromise car,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac Marketing. “The traditional sacrifices no longer apply.”

From a design standpoint, the vehicle’s sharp, swept-back styling allows the ATS to slice through the air with minimal resistance. On its front fascia, the vehicle features active aero grille shutters that automatically close when additional engine cooling is not needed. Underbody aero shields help redirect wind around and under the car, which also contributes to reducing cabin noise. ATS achieves a coefficient drag of .299.

With a base curb weight of 3,315 pounds (1,503kg) ATS is the lightest luxury sport sedan in the world contributing to the car’s quick acceleration and nimble handling. Its lightweight construction also benefits fuel economy.

Attention to detail during the design of its all-new body structure and chassis resulted in an architecture that is strong and lightweight. ATS uses advanced materials in many locations, including:

Ultra high strength steels throughout the car.
An aluminum hood and magnesium engine mounts.
A laminated windshield that is lighter than traditional tempered glass.
Door trim panels made from natural fibers are lighter than the standard-issue plastics.

Cadillac ATS 2.0T EPA Rated at 31 MPG Highway

The Cadillac ATS is the American brand’s answer to the BMW 3 Series and it has now received an official EPA fuel rating of 21 mpg city and 31 mpg highway when equipped with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine.

Three engine options are available in the car, starting with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 202 hp, and offers an EPA rated 22 city and 33 highway mpg. Next is the 2.0-liter turbo, that puts out 272 hp, and gets 21 mpg city 31 mpg highway. Finally, the largest engine in the lineup, the 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 321 hp gets an EPA rated 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Helping to improve the fuel economy of the ATS are active aero grille shutters that close when the engine does not need any additional cooling, as well as underbody aero shields, which also contribute to a reduction in cabin noise. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Chevrolet also uses the same features on the Cruze Eco to save gas.

The ATS starts at $33,990, and reaches to $42,090.

Here's a Tip To Extend the Life of Your Car

Fix bad weatherstripping immediately.

If your weatherstripping is letting rainwater leak into the interior of your car, take a look at it and decide if you can repair it or if it needs to be replaced. Small leaks can be handled with brush-on seam sealers. Resecure loose sections, not otherwise damaged, with trim adhesive. Torn sections may be repaired with special caulking available at auto parts stores. You may also be able to extend the life of worn-but-intact sections by inserting foam rods, available at automotive stores, into the hollow section of the weatherstripping. If you decide to replace entire sections of gasket, don’t simply buy generic stuff such as you’d use around the house. Buy a product that matches your car’s original weatherstripping — it’s available in a wide variety of profiles from dealerships and automotive mail-order catalogues.

Cadillac ‘Virtual Bumpers’ Can Help Avoid Crashes

Three new Cadillac models, including the ATS sport sedan, have a new advanced safety system that can automatically stop the vehicle in low-speed conditions to help avoid crashes.

Cadillac’s Front and Rear Automatic Braking acts like a “virtual bumper,” slamming on the brakes as a last resort to help drivers in heavy traffic or even in parking lots and driveways where the driver might fail to see another vehicle or object in his path.

Automatic Front and Rear Braking is part of the new optional Driver Assist Package on the 2013 ATS sport sedan, XTS luxury sedan and SRX crossover. Relying on a network of sophisticated sensors and advanced electronics, the system can help drivers avoid crashes in low-speed conditions and reduce impact speed under higher speed circumstances.

“Radars, vision, and ultrasonic sensors in the vehicle are constantly analyzing data and working together to determine if a crash may be imminent,” said Charles Green, the driver performance specialist responsible for the development of the Driver Assist Package technologies. “Based on these calculations, the vehicle can automatically brake to avoid a crash or reduce impact speed, and if necessary, can apply the vehicle’s maximum braking capability.”

If the driver fails to respond to other alerts, such as the Safety Alert Seat vibrations, and a potential collision is imminent, the automatic braking is designed to apply the brakes and stop the vehicle.  The driver may override any automatic braking action taken by the vehicle. If the system brings the car to a stop, the electronic parking brake will hold the car in place until the driver presses the accelerator pedal.

In developing the technology, engineers had to finesse the system to avoid unwanted activations, ensuring that it is only a last resort.

“We have spent eight years researching driver behavior which has been incorporated into the design of automatic braking in the Cadillac ATS, XTS, and SRX,” said Green. “Our goal is to effectively provide an extra level of safety support while keeping the driver in complete control of the vehicle at all times.”

The Driver Assist Package will be available on Performance and Premium trim levels of ATS, XTS, and SRX. The package also includes side blind zone alert and full-speed range adaptive cruise control. ATS and XTS models will also feature a full-color, reconfigurable head-up display that helps keep the driver's eyes on the road.

Cadillac Donates First ATS to Duchenne Research

1347889854104
The first 2013 Cadillac ATS produced for a customer will be auctioned with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Team Joseph, a non-profit organization that funds Duchenne muscular dystrophy research.

The car was retained by Cadillac since it was built recently in Lansing, Mich. The ATS is on its way to Barrett-Jackson’s Las Vegas auction on Sept 20-22.

Barrett-Jackson’s collector-car show will take place at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, broadcast nationally on SPEED. Barrett-Jackson will waive its commission fee from the auction so every dollar of the winning bid goes to Team Joseph.

In 2008, 5-year old Joseph Penrod was diagnosed with Duchenne, a disease that robs children of muscle function and ultimately attacks the heart and lungs. Joseph, now eight and living in Michigan, inspired the founding of Team Joseph and its mission to fund research for Duchenne treatments.

“There are therapies in development right now that could help this generation of children, but we have to keep the momentum going. Someday soon, when a child is diagnosed with Duchenne, it will not be a devastating disease but simply a manageable condition.” said Marissa Penrod, Joseph’s mother and founder and CEO of the non-profit. “Team Joseph is thrilled to be the recipient of Cadillac’s generosity through the donation of the first ATS,”

Duchenne is a lethal form of muscular dystrophy affecting one in every 3,500 male births around the world. Only through recent advances in care have some patients been able to live with Duchenne beyond their teenage years.

“Donating the first Cadillac ATS will allow us to raise money and awareness for a very important cause,” said Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac marketing. “It’s our way of supporting treatment for Duchenne, with some of that research occurring in our home state of Michigan.”

The crystal red, Premium-trim ATS up for auction will be fully equipped with a 3.6L V-6 estimated at 320 horsepower. The car will also feature CUE, Cadillac’s comprehensive in-vehicle user experience that merges intuitive design with industry-first controls and commands for information and media.
